I’ve been meaning to blog about this for the longest while, but with the deadline for registration approaching I have to do it now!
The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus offers a degree in Carnival Studies according to their facebook page:
The Carnival Studies Unit is an academic unit within the Department of Creative and Festival Arts , The University of the West Indies, St Augustine through which B.A. degree in Carnival Studies and a minor in Culutral Studies are taught. The Carnival Studies Unit engages both the historical exploration of the Carnival phenomenon and its impact on Caribbean identity as well as the entrepreneurial …and institutional expansion of the Creative industries within the region. The Carnival Studies degree, at present focuses on three main areas 1) creative Enterprise management and entrepreneurship 2) Cultural Studies 3) Mas Design and Carnival research. The degree currently exposes students to a dynamic package of courses that prepares them for engagement in the Carnival and Creative industry as leaders in innovation, cultural research and festival management.
The following courses of study are also listed:
i. BA in Carnival Studies
ii. minor in Cultural Studies
iii. Creative Source an outreach artist employment agency(non-profit)
iv. Kaiso Dialogues
v. Carnival Studies Unit Carnival Studies Colloquium
vi. Yogah (pronounced yo-hah) Carnival Fete
I have to say that I think this is such an amazing opportunity for young Carnival lovers to do something fun and productive, become entrepreneurs and contribute in a very meaningful way to the culture of the nation.

It’s almost summer and the world is in Carnival mode. In Berlin, Germany from today the 17th – 20th of May 2013 it is Carnival Weekend. In its 18th year, Karneval der Kulturen which means Carnival of Cultures hosts a large street parade with parties, music, food, drinks and activities for both the young and the old. The city of Berlin estimates about 1.4 million guests from around the world to come and experience their huge summer festival. One event contains four stages of music from various world regions with performers and DJs, while culinary delights and handmade arts and crafts are offered in the approximately 400 stands. Whitsunday, is the final day of the event which celebrates Berlin’s cultural diversity with traditional costumes and ritual dances.

The International Soca Monarch Semi-Finals were held last night at the Arima Veledrome sans Bunji Garlin and Fayann Lyons-Alvarez. There were however many other talents in attendance. See photos from last night here
