It’s almost summer and the world is in Carnival mode. In Berlin, Germany from today the 17th – 20th of May 2013 it is Carnival Weekend. In its 18th year, Karneval der Kulturen which means Carnival of Cultures hosts a large street parade with parties, music, food, drinks and activities for both the young and the old. The city of Berlin estimates about 1.4 million guests from around the world to come and experience their huge summer festival. One event contains four stages of music from various world regions with performers and DJs, while culinary delights and handmade arts and crafts are offered in the approximately 400 stands. Whitsunday, is the final day of the event which celebrates Berlin’s cultural diversity with traditional costumes and ritual dances.

I just watched the much anticipated Nicki Minaj video release of “Pound the Alarm”. From the very first second I was transported to as Kees so perfectly calls it “the only place I love”. Trinidad is represented in the beautiful place I always think of it as, with clips of all familiar places and the splendor that is our mas.
The mini Carnival is so perfect in timing as we are in full Carnival band launch season, and there is nothing I can say I don’t like about it! Great job Nicki and Benny Boom.
Nothin’ but a teaser!
This morning the tiniest little costume image was circulating, I tried to see it on bbm to no avail. This afternoon this was video was released, so maybe now you have more to imagine? If you pause at 15 seconds and stare you can get a pretty good view of a second costume.
Now this is what a call a Preview Picture!
This year Natural Freaks Unlimited is extending their Carnival Band to New York. After years of having a successful band for Miami Carnival, they have formed Freaks NY. Freaks NY launched last month with their presentation Illusions with 12 costumes that provide something for everyone interested in playing mas on “the Parkway”.
Veteran designer Janine Renee’s section Magique Noire was presented under Carnival Baby Int’l. She has designed and collaborated on numerous New York, Trinidad, Miami and Toronto costumes and is presenting a section on her own for the first time with Freaks NY. She will be hosting a showcase tomorrow evening at the Mas Camp with lite appetizers, wine and sweet soca to set the mood.
Click HERE to see her section in detail as well as to view a collection of her other design efforts.
Registration is available through the Freaks NY Mas camp website http://www.FreaksNYMas.com or in person at:

Trinidad born Nicki Minaj is shooting a video for the track “Pound the Alarm” off her latest “Pink Friday” album.
The video will be shot on her native island and she’s calling all willing masqueraders for a chance to be a part of it. I for one think it’s great, Nicki Minaj always looks like Mas to me, so this call couldn’t be more fitting.
Send an email of yourself in full costume from any Carnival mas band to firstname.lastname@example.org, and be prepared to walk with your costume today if you are chosen.
Good Luck masqueraders! I can’t wait to see the finished product!
