Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife – Spain

Ava Tavarez 2009 Carnival Queen

Tenerife’s Carnival in the Canary Islands of Spain is said to be the second largest Carnival in the world.  Second only to the Carnival in Rio.

They begin their celebration with the election of a queen. There are various parades, even one especially for horses, called the “cabalgata.”

The festivities are based in Santa Cruz, where the Grand Parade is held, but each town has its own parties (fiestas).

The Carnival is held the same time as Rio and Trinidad (and many others) and all the festivities and parades end with “Entierro de la Sardina,” (Burial of the Sardine), which is a staged funeral in which they are said to bury the spirit of the Carnival on the eve of Ash Wednesday.
