The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, (CHOGM), is a summit meeting of the heads of government from all of the Commonwealth nations. It is held every two years in a different member state, and is chaired by that nation’s respective Prime Minister or President, who acts as the Commonwealth Chairperson-in-Office.
The first CHOGM was held in 1971, and there have been twenty-one held in total with the most recent being held in Trinidad and Tobago in 2009.
The CHOGM meetings have recently been attended by Queen Elizabeth II, who is the Head of the Commonwealth. She opened the meeting in Trinidad (read her address here).
Beginning at the 1997 CHOGM, the meeting has had an official ‘theme’, set by the host nation, on which the discussions have been focused. This year’s theme was “Partnering for a more Equitable and Sustainable Future”.
You may be wondering what any of this is doing on a blog about my Carnival Fete-ish – well the cultural presentation was produced by none other than Carnival guru Brian MacFarlane for the 2009 CHOGM meeting and it was a splendid display!!!
